Rock climbing was formerly considered a sport for extreme hardcore explorers with near-superhuman strength and balance. However, the recent proliferation of mountain climbing gyms throughout America has made rock climbing more approachable, with classes for all ability levels, organized outdoor expeditions, and a friendly community of nature enthusiasts. Nevertheless, professional rock climbing is gaining popularity and has even been proposed as a new Olympic activity, motivating the next generation of climbers.

If you are new to climbing, you must go with beginner climbing courses from one of the best adventure guides.

Italy, Finale Ligure

Finale Ligure is the country’s most extraordinary climbing region, with over 3,000 rock climbing routes. It is surrounded by beautiful hills and lush green valleys. You’ll be spoiled for choice with everything from walls and overhangs to white limestone slabs. Bric Pinarella has 3–4 route pitches from which routes of up to 250 meters in length can be taken. Make a beeline towards Finale Ligure for your European rock climbing vacation.

Begin by honing your mountaineering abilities on lesser glaciers, honing crampon techniques and other skills before progressing to a more leisurely climb like Pic du Glacier d’Alene. There’s also the Gran Paradiso, a 4,000-meter-high climb that’s still considered acceptable for novices. It’s one of the simpler French Alps summits, but the vista is breathtaking. There are five summits for inexperienced mountain climbers to attempt.

Kalymnos, Greece

Most climbers are unaware that rock climbing first appeared on the Greek island of Kalymnos in the 2000s. It is currently regarded as one of Europe’s
